Things I believe

A few convictions about building software and working with people. I expect this list to change.

Make it real sooner

I value speed because trying something gives you information you can’t get from discussing it. Cut the scope, put a working version in front of someone, and use what happens to decide what comes next.

Grit matters more than talent

I’d rather work with someone who keeps learning through a difficult problem than someone who needs everything to come easily. Being willing to feel stupid for a while gets you surprisingly far.

Leave room to change your mind

I want people around me who can challenge my thinking. A strong opinion should come with an idea of what evidence would change it.

Clear explanations are part of the work

A decision gets more useful when other people can understand why it was made. I want to get better at explaining my thinking, especially when the subject is complicated.

Inspired by Lee Robinson’s list.
